The architectural pattern proposed in 2014 — retrievalist-led 24/7 virtual specialist support — becomes the default model for rural critical care.
In 2014 the RFDS commissioned a comprehensive review of its Health & Medical Services covering aeromedical retrieval, primary care, mental health, dental, education and research across Dubbo and Broken Hill. The review reframed the organisation's future around a single thesis: the convergence of enabling technologies will allow specialist medical care to be delivered with immediate accessibility over an infinite geography.
It introduced a virtual critical care advisory model — a 24/7 retrievalist-led service supporting rural clinicians remotely — and a contemporary primary health care model integrating aeromedical and community services. These concepts pre-dated the mainstream rollout of telecritical care in Australia by close to a decade.
The review also redesigned clinical governance, mortality and morbidity processes, mission debrief structures, workforce planning, and the commercial pathway for new service lines — providing an operating blueprint adopted into RFDS implementation planning.
